The 14-Day CQC Inspection Readiness System
The 14-Day CQC Readiness System
The structured fortnight we work through ourselves before every inspection. Eighteen pages. Five phases. Designed by an active Registered Manager — not a consultant who has never run a service.
Most CQC prep documents are written by people who have never been inspected
They read beautifully. They break the moment an inspector asks a real-world question. Wording lifted from the regulation rather than the practice. Forms that don't match the policies they claim to support. Audit cycles that look impressive on paper and crumble under operational pressure.
This 14-day system is the structure I use myself at Care Horizons Limited in the fortnight before any inspection. It's not theory. It is the running order of an actual inspection-ready service — sequenced day by day so a Registered Manager can move from anxious to evidenced in two working weeks.
Inspection readiness is not paperwork. It is operational structure that holds up when inspectors press on it.

The five phases
The 14 days are sequenced as a working programme, not a checklist. Each day has a focused theme tied to a CQC framework area, a short context note, a specific task list (typically 4–6 items), a realistic time estimate, and a clear "evidence to retain" outcome.
Foundations
Governance map. Policy library coverage check. Identify the gaps before you start filling them.
Safe
Medication, safeguarding, risk assessment, MCA, sepsis, lone working. Where most inspections live.
Effective & Caring
Care plans, person-centred evidence, staff knowledge, dignity, consent, accessible information.
Responsive & Well-Led
Feedback loops, complaints, training matrices, governance reviews, audit cycles in motion.
Final review & walk-through
The dry run. Reception to records. Surface anything still soft so it is not surfaced on inspection day.

Built inside a CQC-rated Good service — not abstracted from one
I'm Vierka Hiscock. I have been running Care Horizons Limited — a Bristol community care service — since 2004. Over 21 years I have worked through every CQC framework change, ISO audit cycle, and operational pressure the sector has thrown at us.
This system reflects how an inspection-ready service actually operates: governance map, evidence retention, escalation routes, audit cadence, training matrices, walk-throughs. Not theory. The same fortnight I work through myself.

Common questions
Is this really free?
Yes. No card, no sign-up required to read it. The form is optional if you want the follow-up series.
Does it work for my service type?
The system is built for community care providers — domiciliary, live-in, extra care, supported living, outreach, day services, and Personal Assistant frameworks. Not residential homes.
How much time does it take per day?
Most days run 30–90 minutes for an experienced Registered Manager. Days 13–14 take longer because you walk the whole service end-to-end.
Aligned to the Single Assessment Framework?
Yes. Structured around the five CQC Key Questions used in the 2024 SAF.
What if my service is not currently inspection-ready?
Be honest with yourself. If your audit programme is not running quarter to quarter, no checklist will rescue you in fourteen days. This system is for services that have systems in place and need a structured way to verify those systems will hold up under scrutiny. If you need to build the systems first, start with our CQC Self-Audit instead.
